Description
ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICANS IN POLITICS
Overview
With last year’s historical U.S. Presidential election still fresh in our memory, we cannot escape the sense that this is a time of unprecedented cultural and political change. One visible symptom of this unprecedented wave of change has been the increasing number of new faces on the political landscape, which for the San Francisco Bay Area has included a surge in the number of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) elected to political office. With the Asian Business League of San Francisco’s (ABL-SF’s) longstanding track record for promoting leadership in the APA community, ABL-SF is proud to present a panel featuring some of these new APA leaders so that they can share with us what this change means to our community and how we can nurture the leadership role that comes with political empowerment.
We are honored to have the following distinguished public officials address this change in the local political landscape:
- Joanne F. del Rosario, Mayor, Town of Colma
- Jane Kim, Vice President, Board of Education, San Francisco Unified School District
- Fiona Ma, Assembly Member and Majority Whip, 12th Assembly District, California State Assembly
Moderator
John Chiang, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Pacific National Bank; and Council Member, City of Piedmont
